6 Survival Tips to Keep Your Baby Safe in the Rainy Season
After the hot sticky summer season, the cool monsoon brings a lot of fun and frolic to your little bundle of joy. At the same time, however, it also puts him at the risk of developing seasonal diseases such as malaria, dengue, conjunctivitis, etc. Thus, you need to be extra careful on how to keep your toddler safe and healthy during the rainy season. Below given are some practical tips which we hope will help your babe cope with the monsoon.
Hygiene Matters a Lot:
Since the rainy season brings a lot of humidity in the atmosphere, chances are your little one will sweat a lot, which can make him prone to fungal infections, skin rashes or allergies. Therefore, the first and foremost step towards keeping your baby safe during monsoon is maintaining proper hygiene. Keep your child’s body clean by giving him a bath with mild antiseptic soap at least twice a day. Remember, a clean baby is a healthy baby.
Dress Your Baby Right:
Given that weather fluctuations are quite common during the rainy season, you’re advised to dress your baby in appropriate clothes. When the environment is hot and very humid, dress your little one in loose cotton clothes as they will keep him cool and dry. And if it becomes cold due to heavy rains, you may opt for semi–woolen clothes to keep your child warm. Avoid synthetic and nylon clothes!
Set the Room Temperature Right:
As weather usually gets cold and windy when it rains, we recommend you keep all the windows and doors closed. This will not only help you regulate the temperature of your baby’s room to a great extent but also will keep mosquitoes and flies out of the room. In case the weather is too cold, consider wrapping your child in a thick swaddling blanket or lightweight sleeping bag to make him feel warm and cozy. Avoid switching on the AC as it will drop the temperature even lower.
Say No to Wet Diapers:
Do not let your child stay in a wet diaper during the monsoon season, even for a single minute. Babies, as compared to other seasons, pee more during cold rainy days which might cause them develop skin rashes. Even a slightly wet diaper can make your infant feel cold and lead to flu. So make sure to change your baby’s diaper as soon as you notice it is wet or soiled. If possible, try to give your little one some diaper free time.
Do Not Let Your Baby Get Wet:
If you have a toddler, it may be difficult for you to resist him to play outside in the rain. Let him enjoy the drizzle of rain a bit but do supervise. Before your child goes to play outside, make sure to wear him a protective garment, like a raincoat, so that he could enjoy the pitter-patter of raindrops to the fullest. Also, do not allow your tot to play with stagnant or polluted water as it may cause him skin allergies and infections.
Do Not Ignore Symptoms:
As a caring mother, you should learn about the symptoms and preventive measures of common monsoon-related diseases such as cold, cough, dengue and malaria. Even if you take all the above precautions, there are chances your little one might have symptoms of viral like sneezing, cough, runny nose and red eyes. If so, do contact your pediatrician immediately.
